ethnography: JERSEY FROM ALEBRIJES DE OAXACA EQUIPO DE FÚTBOL
Soccer, known as futbol in Spanish, is a passion for many Mexicans. Seemingly everyone, at some point, plays futbol and fans, aficionados, of teams gather at fields and around televisions to cheer wildly for their favorite teams. This logo for the Alebrijes de Oaxaca team combines two images of speed and spirit. Alebrijes are mythical beasts embodying energy and imagination. Their folk art forms are usually made in paper maché and wood. Grasshoppers, called chapulines in Mexico, are a pre-Columbian symbol for speed. Grasshoppers are cultivated and caught in huge nets in the Valley of Oaxaca as a source of protein. When toasted with salt and lime juice, they are quite tasty!
