ethnography: FLAUTAS

A flute shaped like a bird

One way to make music in Oaxaca is with a flute. Does this look like a flute? It’s both a toy and a musical instrument. Made in several villages, this particular flauta is based on a pre-Columbian form found in archaeological sites in the area. The tails of the bird and the peacock have openings into which you can blow and make a whistle sound. More than a whistle, with practice, the player can make sounds and really play a song!
