The national flag of Mexico

Mini Docs:
1) History of the flag

  • Locate Mexico on various maps and globes. Explore the geography of the country, location relative to where students are currently, and have students make educated guesses about climate, population, environment based on what they read on the maps/globes. Do a K-W-L chart with students, and have students practice research skills to look up answers. (NYC SS 3.1, 3.2; SS Practices A, D; Literacy RI.3.5)
  • Discuss with students what they see on their country’s flag and what they know about why it looks the way it does. For example, for the American flag What do the stars represent? The stripes? The colors? Invite students to list all they can see on the Mexican flag. As a large group or in pairs, have them list in their field book what they think each of the symbols on the Mexican flag means. Review the actual meanings of the symbols and colors, and have the students look at other flags in Latin America and research the symbolism on the flags. Why would a nation put symbols on a flag? What does it tell you about what is important to the culture? Students can design their own flags for the classroom/school, or for their city/town, using symbols that are meaningful. Write an explanation of what the symbols mean. (NYS SS 3.4, 3.5; SS Practices A, B, C, D; Literacy RI.3.7)
  • Besides flags, how else does a country show recognize and symbolize its history? Look for other items in the trunk that have historical or national symbolism. Create a classroom exhibition for Mexico. Have students bring in objects that represents the countries their families came from. Or let students choose a country about which they are interested in knowing more. Look for similarities and differences between the countries and what “national” symbols become. Are these symbols representative of all the cultures which live in the county?  What do the similarities suggest to you?  How can we respect the differences between the cultures? What would the world be like if we all respected each other’s cultures? (NYS SS 3.4, 3.5; SS Practices A, B, C, D)
